On one day of the year, every year, a substitute--a representative--sacrifice was made in the tabernacle in the middle of Israel. Sin was both cleansed and sent away, and the wrath of God averted. But the Day of Atonement was flawed: Israel needed a better high priest and a better sacrifice. Both are fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, as we find out in Hebrews 7 - 10.
