Jonah, the elect prophet of God to Nineveh, runs the other direction when commanded to go and preach to the enemy city. The first chapter of this short book reveals two things not about Jonah but the heart of God. First, he is sovereign over all, even a great city like Nineveh which does not acknowledge him is under his judgment. Second, the heart of God is unfailingl compassionate and merciful. The two characteristics of God: his mercy and his judgment, are intertwined and cannot be separated.
