Before the Israelites could enter into their inheritance, God required them to observe the covenant markers of circumcision and the passover meal. These identified them as the people of God, divinely birthed, distinct from the nations around them that were in opposition to God (as the exodus generation had been in the wilderness). For the church today, circumcision is analogous to baptism, and passover to the Lord's Supper.
