Why did Jesus come? After being shown by God that Jesus is The Christ, Peter understands who Jesus is. But that is only Part One of the story of Jesus. Part Two is why he came, what his mission was. Jesus explicitly states that his mission is to suffer and die. He will be the Messiah, but he will suffer as the Messiah. He will be the suffering servant King. Peter rebukes Jesus as if to say: "You cannot possibly allow yourself to be killed! You're the King!" So, why did Jesus have to die? We examine some of the relevant texts in the background of Jesus' mission. He will take up his cross, for the sake of those who will follow him.
