Jonah ran from Yahweh not because of the hardness of the task he was given nor because of the sternness of the prophecy he had to give, but because he knew that the Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. His mercy and compassion are directed not just towards Israel, his covenant partner, but the whole world. This makes Jonah very angry.
